Frequently asked questions:

  • What is TRT?
TRT, or Testosterone Replacement Therapy, is a medical treatment for men with low testosterone (“Low T”). Testosterone influences energy, muscle growth, libido, mood, and overall well-being. TRT restores testosterone levels to a healthy range under medical supervision to improve symptoms caused by hormonal decline.

  • Why do testosterone levels decline?
Testosterone naturally declines by about 1% per year after the age of 30. For some men, this decline isn’t significant, but for others it can lead to noticeable symptoms such as fatigue, reduced libido, loss of muscle mass, or mood changes.

  • What are the symptoms of low testosterone?
Common signs of low testosterone (Low T) include:

    • Trouble concentrating or brain fog

    • Mood changes such as irritability or depression

    • Increased body fat

    • Loss of muscle mass and strength

    • Low energy or fatigue

    • Reduced libido or erectile dysfunction

  • Do you work with medical aids?

Many medical aids do not pay for TRT or weight loss management.
For this reason, we do not work with medical aids but charge private rates.
All patients are responsible for payment immediately after consultation.
We accept all Visa or MasterCard payments. No cash accepted.

  • From what age can TRT be done?
Most men over the age of 40 may have low testosterone, but it can occur as young as 20. For this reason, TRT can be considered from the age of 20 up to the age of 80. Each patient will be individually evaluated to ensure they are an appropriate candidate.

  • Will TRT help me get jacked muscles in the gym?
TRT is not for getting jacked in the gym. It is a medically supervised program to correct low testosterone levels and manage the symptoms of low testosterone. Although TRT may assist in building muscle, you still need to follow an effective weightlifting program to build muscle. Man Med does not support or endorse the use of additional anabolic steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs.

  • Will TRT fix my ED or low libido?

  • If your ED or low libido is due to low testosterone, TRT can help restore normal function. However, if your symptoms are caused by stress, lifestyle, medication, or relationship problems, TRT alone will not resolve them.

  • For how long will I have to use TRT?
For most men, low testosterone is due to ageing, which means TRT will be long term. If your body has stopped producing testosterone due to ageing, temporary TRT will not restart natural production. While on TRT, your testosterone levels will improve, but if you stop, levels will decline, and symptoms may return. In isolated cases, where low testosterone is due to other causes, TRT may only be temporary.

  • From what age can medical weight loss be done?
From the age of 12, provided the patient has a BMI of 27 or more.

  • Will I have to follow a strict diet for medical weight loss?
When using GLP-1s, you do not have to follow a strict or limiting diet. Man Med provides an easy-to-follow, long-term, affordable and practical eating plan called The Wammo Way to all medical weight loss patients.

  • For how long will I be on GLP-1s?
GLP-1 usage is safe long term, with additional benefits of lowering risks for heart attacks and strokes. However, due to current high costs, it may not be practical for everyone to use them long term. Man Med’s goal is to get you to your ideal weight while improving lifestyle habits. Once your goal is reached, GLP-1s can be stopped if you maintain healthy eating and exercise, but poor lifestyle choices can cause weight regain.

  • Must I follow an intensive exercise program to lose weight?
No. However, exercise can help with faster weight loss and, importantly, help maintain muscle during weight loss, preventing muscle loss due to GLP-1 use. Man Med provides patients with an exercise program tailored to their fitness level and experience, from beginner to advanced.

  • Are results guaranteed?
Results vary from person to person. Best results depend on following your program precisely. Some patients may not respond to TRT or GLP-1s. In such cases, Man Med will assist in identifying contributing factors and suggest alternative approaches to help you reach your goals.

  • Can you prescribe my chronic medication?
Man Med is run by Dr Wayne Kretschmer, a fully qualified general practitioner. All chronic medication can be prescribed, with a focus on cost-effective generics when possible. Where suitable, prescriptions will align with medical aid formularies so medication costs can be claimed from medical aid.

  • Do you provide normal medical consultations also?
Yes, Dr Kretschmer provides all forms of general practitioner services for Man Med patients.

  • Do you provide services for women also? Can you help my wife?
Currently, hormone services are limited to men. However, weight loss management is available for all family members of Man Med patients. We are planning to expand in the future to offer bio-identical hormones and HRT for women.

  • I have read negative reports on the internet about TRT and GLP-1s. Is it safe?
We encourage all potential patients to research TRT and GLP-1s and make an informed decision. It is best to use reliable medical sources rather than social media opinions. If you have questions or concerns, please email info@manmed.co.za. We will do our best to answer with evidence-based information to address your concerns.
